In school, when you have to a paper or a letter or something to be turned in. Proper grammar must be used. Sorry if this is one of those “unpopular opinion” moments, but it’s just necessary. If the grammar is not proper, especially for women and for people of color, it is very easy to be discredited or seen as less than.

As people we must hold ourselves to the standard that is required not just for society however, but for appreciation of the past. We love literature of the past, we study it and we adore it, what would those authors we love so much think, if they knew we rid of grammar as a whole? I don’t imagine it would be good.

As for schools, it should be taught, but that doesn’t have to make it a chore. Finding ways to connect with students and teach to their level and in ways they can engage is the job of teacher. Difficult, but nonetheless.

We must know the rules to break them, so someone needs to tell us the rules.
